Here’s how I can help unlock the most from your film images:
-
Before going full-time with Subtle Negative, I worked for seven years at my local film lab, Camera Kingston Photo Source. During that time I also built my expertise in the art documentation process.
My years of technical experience with the professional image pipeline of scanning, retouching, and printing mean I can work with your film safely and efficiently with a deep knowledge of film and colour. I genuinely love and care for every image and roll of film that I work with.
Your film is scanned in a dust-filtered room, handled with lint-free gloves, and safely blown clean with compressed air before scanning.
Other lab scans from a Fuji or Noritsu scanner will use a technology called Digital ICE that detects dust and digitally paints over it. My scanning method reveals far more detail, and that can unfortunately include dust.
I offer precise digital dust removal by hand using the same tools in Lightroom and Photoshop that you use, or I leave the control to you.
I never use destructive techniques, AI, or automatic dust and scratch removal.
-
35mm & 120 film can be scanned beyond the frame edge and kept flat with my pro setup from Negative Supply.
Exquisitely accurate tones are captured with my colour-calibrated camera profile and Negative Supply’s 97 CRI light source.
Get unparalleled resolution, dynamic range retention, and sharpness with frames imaged by the 61 megapixel Sony A7Rv camera and 90mm G Macro Lens.
See grain, not pixels. With macro level sharpness, Sony’s Pixel Shift Multishot, and image stitching techniques, I achieve file sizes made for printing 40x60 inches at 300 pixels per inch (and beyond!) with true detail rendering and no AI or upscaling.
-
You haven’t heard this before… I want to give you the RAW files for every scan along with my colour processed TIFF files. Scan it once with me and have the ability to completely revisit the colour yourself, or with my help, at any point down the road. I’m betting on the fact that you’ll love the convenience and accuracy of my colour work every time.
Details you haven’t seen before! Experience image resolution over 12,600 x 19,000 pixels and see what’s been hiding in your negatives.
Future proof your colour for HDR display with files in ProPhoto RGB colour space by default and the option to scan using pixel-shift to eliminate the camera’s Bayer Filter and get true pixel-level colour.
I use industry standard software and colour conversion using Negative Lab Pro, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, and have over 10 years of experience.
Every frame is colour converted with individual care and attention to your style and requests. A review and redo period is included with every order so we’ll nail it every time.

*Although roughly the same resolution as the 16-Shot Scan, the Ultimate Scan shows significantly more detail due to the lens’ ability to resolve more in each segment of the image. The camera is brought into macro focus with the negative and a minimum of 4 partial scans are made, each one a 4-shot pixel shift, and those 16 frames are then combined into your final image. I pay enormous attention to the integrity of the image stitching and that takes extra time and precision adjusting the camera position during scanning.
